NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) ? The Commission on the
General Conference is seeking a music director for the United Methodist Church?s
2008 General Conference. The deadline for applying is Feb. 1, 2006.
The top lawmaking body for the 11 million-member denomination will meet April
23-May 2, 2008, in Fort Worth, Texas.
The music director is responsible for the overall music program management at
General Conference and oversees liturgy and music throughout the assembly,
including inviting choirs and worship groups from across the church to
participate.
The Rev. Barbara Day Miller, assistant dean of worship at Candler School of
Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, was music director for the 2004 General
Conference, held in Pittsburgh.
?It takes a high level of organization and also a sense of humor,? Miller said
of her experience with the 2004 conference. One of her concerns in organizing
the music program was finding a way to represent the whole church. She said it
was her prayer that General Conference would be a time ?where we make space for
everybody?s song.?
Those interested in applying may view the
music director position description. The position
is also posted at UMC.org.
Applications should include a brief resume and a short audition video
highlighting music leadership abilities in a variety of settings. Application
materials should be sent by Feb. 1 to Rev. Alan J. Morrison, Business Manager of
General Conference, P.O. Box 340029, Nashville, TN, 37203-0029.
The General Conference, which meets every four years, is a two-week assembly of
1,000 delegates from around the world who gather to set church policies and make
pronouncements on social and moral issues of the day. General Conference is the
only organization that speaks for the United Methodist Church.
