This is possibly a very un-Constitutional act taken by the 44th American President. The UMC does not need official reps of our denomination playing politics in an Election Year debacle of violating the US Code, the federal legislative process, and not enforcing the very law that the Executive branch is tasked with doing. While the plight of anyone fearing deportation may be real and need appropriate attention from federal lawmakers, it is sickening (to be blunt) to see ordained religious leaders showing that they have no awareness, much less knowledge of the separation of Church and State in the USA.
Actually, it is a power granted to the Executive Branch to enforce the law. If they feel a law to be wrong they do not have to enforce it unless Congress challenges them and takes it to the Supreme Court to decide. Enforcing the law and how it is enforced is an executive power. Religious leaders can have opinions on what the government does. The separation of Church and State is to keep there from being a religion enforced by the government, or government encroaching on religion. It doesn't mean that religious organizations can't have opinions on the government. Methodist opposition to slavery would be a good example. It is a moral obligation of those who follow the teachings of Jesus Christ to try to change things they see as oppressing people unfairly.
Illegals should all be deported. Obama should at minimum consult with congress before he makes these sweeping decisions. Get rid of the anchor baby law.
Where did your ancestors come from, K? Should we deport all non-citizens' US-born children? How about grandchildren? How about greatgrandchildren? If we retroactively enforce your standards back to 1492, where will you be deported to? Or are you going to leave willingly now as a demonstration of your fierce adherence to your principles?
I bet that K's ancestors came over here LEGALLLY as most of our ancestors did. They didn't sneak over the border illegally. I don't agree with what the president did. If this keeps up, why have any laws at all????? Why not take away the constitution all together??? Poitics don't seem to be following it anymore anyway!
I bet you that K's ancestors, along with so many of our other ancestors, came over here LEGALLY and didn't sneak across the border to get here. I don't think the president had any reason to do what he did. Why have any laws at all, if he isn't going to follow them. Why even have a constitution? Politics don't follow that either. Oh I think the Lord is coming sooner that we think! I pray that we are all ready when he does come.
Since another rewarding of border crossing and visa overstaying is sure to encourage more of the same behavior (after all the 30 year age goes back to around the time of the last amnesty when Reagan legalized the illegals in hopes of border control from the democrat progresssive congress WHICH NEVER CAME) perhaps the United Methodist church can speak out about the crimes that hurt these migrants. The 15,000 murders along the border each year are sure to continue. The rape trees covered with the undergarments of young girls who have to bear torture from the coyotes or drug cartels. The huge environmental damage and garbage piles in the wilderness areas are sure to grow larger. Wildfires set by drug cartels as diversions are sure to continue. Cities along the border sometimes lack law enforcement in the wave of dismembered bodies, beheadings and murders to send warnings to stay out of the cartels business. What will the position of the church be if another terrorist weapon of mass destruction goes off. Hezbollah cells are active south and north of the border whether it is politically correct to say it or not. Prominent clerics have preached in Tahrir Square in Egypt in front of hundreds of thousands of followers about bringing things like a suitcase of anthrax across the southern border. Remember Muhammad Atta was ann illegal immigrant who had overstayed his visa to take "classes" in flying airplanes.
Some of us would actually give immigrants the dignity of a front door through which they can go back and forth instead of using them AGAIN as a political tool while endangering their lives and ours .
IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO THEY WERE CHILDREN WE SHOULD MAKE THEM CITIZENS!!
Why do these "children" as you call them, get special treatment over many others who are waiting their turn-legally-to become an American citizen?
Remember, if a President is willing to abuse his power by going around Congress (and get away with it) to make an immigration reform decision that affects 800 thousand people, what else could he do without following the laws of America?
Always remember, "A government big enough to give you everything you need, is a government big enough to take away everything you have."
This is a very dangerous precedent set by this current President, and anyone who enjoys the freedom of America should be very uncomfortable with this sort of action. Our freedom could be taken away with the stroke of a pen as quickly as 800 thousand immigrants were given freedom.
Wow
that’s a relief we finally get to put to rest the fable that liberals
love democracy or respect the rule of law. This is what democracy
looks like indeed. All at the same time we get to dispel the notion that
the UMC administration is the head of a religious organization instead
of anything but a liberal mouth piece for the Democratic Party.
Are you people really so short sighted that you want a
President that, at his whim, blows off his job as the chief law
enforcement officer of the nation and picks and chooses what laws he
thinks should and should not be enforced. If he had
really thought this was such a great idea why didn’t he use his majority
in both housed just 2 years ago to make this the law.
You think you want this because the outcome was laudable, but wait
until it’s someone in power that you don’t agree with doing bad
things. We can’t go down this road, it won’t be pretty.
So much hate, such little love for one's neighbor. I pray for you.
I agree with Eric. It's not hate to lament that the President of the United States violates his oath of office to faithfully execute the laws and selectively choose which laws to enforce and which to ignore. The end does not justify the means when the means are unlawful. Love has nothing to do with it.
Hate comes from someone having done something to you personally. These comments of people following the law in NOT HATE. It is a statement of facts. I know of a woman that had to wait five years for a Visa to come to the USA. Is this Love for an East European individual. She was a practicing Physician. She had to scrub floors, clean restrooms and learn the language over a five year time, before she became a citizen. She did it RIGHT!!!! She had to go through much red tape to get credit for her professional training. Now she is a research scientist at the University of Memphis. Did she do it Right or Wrong. Where was the UMC showing love in her struggle?
We
are a nation of LAWS. The parents of these 18-30 year olds have broken
the law by crossing the border and remaining her for how many years. Did
they obtain a driver's license? Have they voted? We, as a nation, take
in 1000,000 immigrants legally any year. All legally. More than any
other country. So, are you saying it is OK to come her with out the
proper papers? How does this stop what has been happening for over 20
year.
Two things have not been addressed as of yet! What do we do with the relatives of those who are getting the working permit for two years? And who is going to check on these people after two years? If they don't show up to renew, then what? We have a government which is not enforcing the law now. Will it in the future?
It looks like the the higher ups in the Methodist Church are leaning way to far to the left on more and more issues that they have no business getting into.
Free passes! Step right up!! FREE passes. You don't have to go through those stinking classes to learn the history of this country...nothing about what the founder sacrificed...no pride in learning English...nope...just a FREE PASS. This is just every kind of wrong.
Bishop Carcaño, thanks so much for standing firm for Christian social justice. My ancestors two and three generations back were immigrants, and I hope others will always have the same chance. Jesus said, "Come unto me all you who labor." I hope Americans can learn to say the same.
Have you heard of the concept of separation of church and State? When you infuse religious dogma, like you and others are doing with this issue, how do you justify it?
