New Albany UMC destroyed by early morning
storm
New Albany United Methodist Church, in the
Kansas East Conference, has collapsed from strong storm winds that
hit early May 8. The storm affected many parts of southeast
Kansas.
In a mobile home across the street from the church, a woman died
when the home was destroyed by the winds.
“Many members of the congregation are gathered at the church
site, sorting through the debris and offering support to each
other,” said Parsons District Superintendent Rev. Janet Maxwell.
“There are signs of hope: the brand new digital piano was unharmed,
and they’ve found the Christmas decorations.”
New Albany UMC Pastor Susan Galvan has been on the scene all day,
offering pastoral care to the members of the congregation and
community.
“This is a really strong community, and they will support each
other well. But I know they would appreciate everyone’s prayers and
support,” Maxwell said.
